Arthritis Foundation Facts

The Arthritis Foundation was founded in 1948 as the Arthritis and rheumatism
Foundation to support research to find a cure for and prevention of arthritis
and to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation is the only national, voluntary health agency
seeking the causes, cures, prevention's and treatments for the more than
100 forms of arthritis and is supported by more than 400,000 volunteers.

The Arthritis Foundation's sponsorship of research for 50 years has
resulted in major treatment advances for most arthritis conditions. These
include the use of cortisone, which was shown to produce a dramatic improvement
in reducing the effects of rheumatoid arthritis and great advancements
in joint replacement surgical techniques, such as biologic fixation, a
cementless joint replacement technique that induces bone to grow and interlock
with the artificial joint's surface. Scientists currently funded by the
Arthritis Foundation are very near to other major findings.

The Arthritis Foundation currently provides $16 million annually in
grants to more than 300 researchers to help find a cure, prevention or
better treatment for arthritis.

Since its inception, the Arthritis Foundation has spent more than $200
million on research and supported more than 1,700 scientists and physicians
in arthritis research.
The Arthritis Foundation also provides a large number of community-based
services nationwide to make life with arthritis easier and less painful.
These services include: self-help courses, water and land-based exercise
classes, support groups, instructional videotapes, educational brochures
and booklets for the public, and continuing education courses and publications
for health professionals.
